Accidentally Vegan — Privacy Policy

Accidentally Vegan is a barcode-scanning app that helps you determine whether packaged foods are vegan by analyzing their ingredients. This policy explains what data the app collects, how it is used, and who it is shared with. We do not sell your personal information.

Information We Collect

Account information. You can use the app anonymously or sign in with a social login (e.g. Sign in with Apple/Google). When you sign in we store an account identifier so your data can be associated with you across devices.
Scans and activity. We store your scan history and favourited products so they are available to you when you return.
Photos you submit. When you scan an ingredient label or submit a community product, the captured image may be uploaded to our servers so the ingredients can be read and the product entry can be reviewed and improved.
Community contributions. Products, ingredient lists, and issue reports you submit are stored so they can be shown to other users and used to improve the shared product database.
Diagnostics. Basic app analytics and crash data may be used to improve reliability and performance.

How We Use Your Information

To look up products and determine vegan status, including reading ingredient text from photos and analyzing ingredients.
To save your scan history and favourites and sync them to your account.
To build and maintain a shared database of products and ingredients for all users.
To diagnose problems and improve the app.

How Information Is Shared

We use the following third-party services to operate the app. Information is shared with them only as needed to provide the functionality above:

Google Firebase (authentication, database, and image storage) — hosts your account, scan history, favourites, submitted images, and community contributions.
Open Food Facts — queried with scanned barcodes to retrieve public product and ingredient data.
Anthropic (Claude) — receives ingredient text and label images to extract ingredients and assess vegan likelihood. Submitted text and images are processed by this service to generate results.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Data Retention

Account-linked data (scan history and favourites) is retained while your account exists. Community contributions and product/ingredient data may be retained as part of the shared database even after an account is deleted, but are not personally identifying.

Your Choices

You can use the app anonymously without creating a named account.
You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data by contacting us at the email below.

Children's Privacy

Accidentally Vegan is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
